BOOK COVER (Narnia)
This project is a bespoke, illustrated cover design for C.S. Lewis’s classic fantasy novel, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The deliverables include the final book cover and illustrative conceptualization, alongside functional applications such as a premium book mockup and merchandising concepts, all unified by a commitment to classical fantasy illustration.

problem
The classic fantasy genre (and Narnia specifically) is saturated with derivative visual interpretations. The challenge was twofold: Narrative Condensation: To design a cover that visually synthesizes three massive narrative elements (Aslan, the Witch/the Journey, and the magical gateway) without appearing cluttered or reductive. Aesthetic Authority: To create an image that appeals to modern young readers while maintaining the nostalgic, "hand-painted" authority that adult readers, and collectors, expect from a heritage property. The design needed to feel like a timeless artifact.
solution
I engineered a solution that uses an "Inverse-Gateway" composition. Instead of a literal wardrobe door, I utilized a "Force Perspective" painting technique: I placed the protagonist (the figure in the crimson cloak) at a extreme distance, creating a sense of dwarfed scale. Additionally, the viewer's eye is led from the vulnerable traveler toward the massive, grounded majesty of Aslan (the Lion). Finally, Aslan is flanked by two towering, gnarled ancient trees. This composition creates a psychological "threshold," reinforcing the moment the boundary to Narnia is crossed. The result is an immediate sense of scale and awe.
DETAIL & TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT

SHAPE & COMPOSITION
The cover’s structure is built on a symmetrical, vertical force-perspective. I utilised towering, gnarled ancient trees, symbolising the enduring nature of Narnia’s magic—to flank Aslan, creating a psychological "threshold". The extreme vertical scale of the trunks makes the figure in the crimson cloak appear vulnerable and minuscule, immediately establishing a sense of awe and epic adventure. Aslan is positioned at the central apex, serving as the narrative’s ultimate anchor and destination.
COLOUR & TEXTURE
The Saffron Lion: I utilised a palette of rich, Saffron Gold and Oxide Orange for Aslan, ensuring he radiates warmth, authority, and light against the cooler background.
The Crimson Cloak: I selected a saturated Crimson Red for the traveller. This functional choice serves as an intense focal point, contrasting sharply with the dominant greens and golds to guide the eye directly to the human story.
The Deep Forest: The background uses muted, textured greens and muted purples, which I applied using specialised "Oil-Brush" digital techniques to emulate a classical, heritage painting.
TYPOGRAPHY
The typography utilises a functional dichotomy:
Author Header (C.S. Lewis): Set in a Classical Serif (like Garamond or Caslon), providing instant canonical authority. It is placed on a simulated Scrolled Parchment header, which anchors the text and gives the cover a "found historical document" aesthetic.
Title (Script): I utilised a fluid, dynamic script (like Aesthetic) for the title. The "Lion" and "Wardrobe" keywords are emphasised to create a secondary narrative hierarchy, mirroring the magic of the story.
