ELYSIAN

Elysian is a high-end hospitality and luxurious brand that redefines the modern cafe experience. This multidisciplinary project spans a sophisticated visual identity, a premium e-commerce digital experience, and sustainable bespoke packaging, all unified by a commitment to artisanal quality and botanical inspiration.

problem

The independent cafe market is often divided between "utilitarian" quick-service shops and overly rustic "vintage" aesthetics. The challenge was to create a third space: a brand that feels deeply rooted in nature but maintains a high-fashion, premium polish. I needed to design a visual system that could bridge the gap between a physical sensory environment (the cafe) and a commercial retail product (bespoke tea and coffee packaging) without losing its artisanal soul.

solution

I engineered a "Botanical-Minimalist" system that utilizes a palette of Obsidian Plum, Warm Sand, and Crème. By balancing delicate, hand-illustrated organic forms with structured, classical typography, I created an identity that feels both timeless and contemporary. This system was then scaled across a modular website architecture and high-fidelity packaging, ensuring that the Elysian "sanctuary" feeling is maintained from the first digital click to the physical unboxing of a product.

BRAND IDENTITY

LOGO

The Elysian mark is a custom-engineered sigil that merges organic life with mathematical stability. At its centre is the sprouting tea leaf—a symbol of growth, revitalisation, and artisanal origin. This organic form is grounded by a "root" structure that mirrors the shape of a coffee bean, creating a dual-meaning icon for the hospitality industry. By encasing the illustration in a fine-weight circular frame, the logo achieves a sense of "wholeness," acting as a seal of quality that works equally well as a physical stamp or a digital favicon.

COLOUR PALETTE

The colour system moves away from high-energy artificial tones in favour of a sensory-driven, earth-toned palette:

  • Obsidian Plum: A deep, regal purple that provides a grounded, sophisticated base. It replaces standard black to add warmth and a "vintage luxury" feel.

  • Warm Sand & Crème: These neutral tones act as the primary canvas, reflecting natural materials like unbleached paper and ceramic.

  • Botanical Sage: Injected through photography and UI accents, this colour reinforces the brand's connection to nature and sustainable sourcing.

TYPOGRAPHY

To achieve a balance between botanical warmth and modern luxury, I curated a four-font system. Each typeface serves a specific functional role while contributing to the brand's "Digital Sanctuary" atmosphere.

  • Arizona (The Signature Script)

    • Feeling: Artisanal, fluid, and intimate.

    • Rationale: Selected to act as the "human touch" of the brand. This script mirrors the organic, flowing lines of a hand-poured tea or a handwritten note. It is utilised primarily for accent titles and hero messaging to inject a sense of movement and "crafted luxury" into static layouts.

  • Aboreto (The Architectural Header)

    • Feeling: Timeless, sophisticated, and structured.

    • Rationale: With its wide apertures and classical proportions, Aboreto serves as the primary brand identifier. It provides a "stone-carved" authority reminiscent of heritage fashion houses, grounding the more delicate elements of the identity with a sense of permanence and high-end polish.

  • Amita (The Ornamental Serif)

    • Feeling: Elegant, rhythmic, and cultural.

    • Rationale: Amita acts as the bridge between the fluid script and the structured headers. Its unique serif construction provides a rhythmic quality that feels "botanical." I utilised this for secondary headings to maintain an editorial, magazine-style feel throughout the e-commerce experience.

  • Open Sans (The Functional Foundation)

    • Feeling: Transparent, clean, and accessible.

    • Rationale: For long-form body copy, menu items, and nutritional facts on packaging, legibility is the priority. Open Sans provides a neutral, high-readability foundation that doesn't compete with the more expressive brand fonts, ensuring the user experience remains friction-less across all digital and print touchpoints.

WEBSITE ARCHITECTURE

The digital experience was designed to act as a virtual extension of the cafe’s physical atmosphere.

  • Minimalist Editorial Layout: I utilised a "Soft-Grid" system that prioritises white space and high-fidelity sensory photography, reducing cognitive load for the user.

  • Artisanal E-commerce: The interface transitions seamlessly from a storytelling "About" section to a functional retail shop. I integrated custom icon sets and "tasting note" modules to elevate the product selection process, making it feel like a curated consultation rather than a standard transaction.

PACKAGING DESIGN (Teabag)

The Elysian packaging (specifically for the "Earl Grey & Lavender" line) was developed to turn a commodity into a keepsake.

  • Pattern & Texture: I created a repeating botanical watermark that adds a layer of "hidden technicality" to the unboxing experience.

  • Bilingual Sophistication: To reflect the brand’s premium positioning (and its Canadian roots), the typography is meticulously balanced between English and French, using the Arizona script for elegance and Aboreto for structural clarity.

  • Sustainability & Form: The box construction was engineered for both structural integrity and a premium hand-feel, utilising gold-foil accents against a matte finish to contrast the organic with the opulent.
